And though this pumpkin-spiced time of year may look a little different in sunny Southern California, you can still experience seasonal wonder when you explore the San Diego Zoo Safari Park on Saturdays and Sundays in October.

Join us for Autumn Festival to immerse yourself in all the fun and flavors this cozy season has to offer. With exclusive, get-it-while-you-can menu items and celebratory activities for the entire family, here’s a sneak peek of what you can expect.

You’ll start making memories the moment you arrive at Nairobi Village with cool sounds accompanying each step. Catch the laid-back acoustic stylings of Ash Meadows at Oasis on the Rocks before stopping by Village Playground to soak up the bluegrass melodies of The Barn Owls trio.

He’s large, in charge, and the hair on his back is silver-gray. There’s someone new at Gorilla Forest at the San Diego Zoo Safari Park, and you’ll want to meet him—if you haven’t already!

Paul Donn, a 36-year-old silverback with an incredible presence and a patch of red hair on his forehead, recently joined the family group at the Safari Park. He’s their first silverback since the passing of longtime leader Winston last year, and we look forward to seeing how he will carry on his generational heartwarming legacy.

You might recognize Paul Donn, as he most recently led the family group at the San Diego Zoo. His sons have reached maturity, and the time was right to begin the natural next phase for both troops.

Born at the Safari Park, Paul Donn is returning as an experienced silverback to lead the family troop.

He’s (Silver) Back!

Paul Donn’s arrival at the Safari Park’s Gorilla Forest is a full-circle moment as he was born there in 1989, and his mom, Kami, remains a beloved part of the Safari Park troop today. In fact, he is one of only two males who were accepted into this gorilla family by gentle leader Winston, despite being unrelated to him. This was an unusual act of acceptance, as typically a silverback will not allow another male gorilla in his family group that is not his offspring. By welcoming Paul Donn, Winston cemented a bond that helped shape the dynamics of the troop.

Now, years later, Paul Donn is returning—as a leader—ready to create his own chapter in an incredible story. Joining him is 44-year-old Jessica, the other member of his family group at the San Diego Zoo. With these changes, the San Diego Zoo is now home to a thriving bachelor troop, a natural social structure that occurs when males reach maturity and leave their birth troop.

Jessica’s presence alongside Paul Donn will contribute to their natural transition as the family finds a new rhythm under the guidance of a silverback once more. Silverbacks play a vital role in supporting natural social dynamics, offering cohesiveness for the females and making all important decisions for the troop.

Making Preparations

Preparing Paul Donn and Jessica for their new world at the Safari Park took months of planning and collaboration. Every day, wildlife care teams spend countless moments building strong and positive bonds with the gorillas they care for. So for several months before the transition, wildlife care specialists from the Safari Park worked alongside teams at the Zoo to build those new relationships with both Paul Donn and Jessica to ensure their transition would be seamless. The San Diego Zoo team then accompanied the pair to the Safari Park, working closely together as they settled into their new home at Gorilla Forest. This atmosphere of trust and familiarity is helping ensure everyone thrives in this new chapter.

Securing the Future for Gorillas

Paul Donn’s new role at Gorilla Forest followed a recommendation from the Association of Zoos and Aquariums (AZA) Species Survival Plan program for gorillas, which is focused on maintaining a healthy and sustainable population of this critically endangered species.

Gorillas are native to the lush rainforests of Central Africa. While they have no natural predators, they unfortunately face threats that include habitat destruction and illegal wildlife trafficking. Additionally, their close genetic ties to humans make them particularly susceptible to contracting diseases such as Ebola and other lethal viruses, presenting increasing challenges to their coexistence with humans.

Through our African Forest Conservation Hub, San Diego Zoo Wildlife Alliance and our partners are making critical gorilla conservation efforts possible across Central Africa. Collaborative, sustainable, community-led initiatives are empowering the next generation of conservationists. Those efforts are building a future where gorillas can thrive, and people can better coexist with these iconic great apes.

The sun is shining warmly on your face, birds are chirping, and the calls of wildlife echo in the distance. It’s a brand-new day and you’re ready for an adventure like no other. Ahead of you stands the recently opened Safari Excursions, a welcoming lodge nestled within lush foliage, just waiting to transport you to worlds you’ve only dreamed of visiting. At the San Diego Zoo Safari Park, your adventure begins before you even step foot on a safari truck.

From the moment you approach, Safari Excursions engages your imagination. It’s not just a check-in spot and a place to gather for your safari—it’s a hub of connection and community. You'll make your way down the grand pathway, past the national park-inspired welcome sign and regal giraffe sculptures, until you’re greeted by a Safari Park team member at the registration stand. The lodge ahead gleams with character, its exposed wood beams reminiscent of a classic Kenyan safari camp. Inside, relax before your excursion with plenty of comfortable couches, cozy chairs, and even wooden stools with distinctive tusk marks left by the Safari Park’s African elephant herd. The atmosphere feels alive, inviting you to share stories or simply soak in the excitement as your adventure draws closer.

Take a moment to look around the lodge as you unwind. The thoughtful design doesn’t stop at comfort—it’s steeped in purpose. The design and décor tell the story of the Safari Park since its founding in 1972, with our commitment to a world where all life thrives woven into every detail. In the entryway, a map introduces you to our eight Conservation Hubs. Travel posters line the walls, each one representing destinations and species from these Conservation Hubs that you can connect with at the Safari Park. Vibrant imagery of platypuses, Sumatran tigers, and African elephants transports you to riverscapes, forests, and savannas, reminding you how interconnected we all are with the natural world.

Each design element is steeped in purpose in this welcoming hub, telling the story of the Safari Park and our commitment to a world where all life thrives.

Above each of the posters, you may notice archways with unique patterns. These patterns are actually images of complete chromosome sets, known as karyotypes, of living cell lines preserved in our Wildlife Biodiversity Bank’s Frozen Zoo®. This collection of living materials is crucial for advancements in wildlife health, care, conservation, and so much more. The artwork celebrates the cutting-edge conservation breakthroughs the Frozen Zoo has made possible and the limitless potential it has for the future. The Conservation Hub map is accented by a platypus karyotype arch; a macaw variant is above the Australian Forest and Amazonia posters; and over the Southwest and Asia posters is the karyotype of a Sumatran tiger.

Two of the chromosomal karyotypes aren’t quite like the others. Over the African Forest and Savanna poster you’ll find the depiction of one incredible African elephant—Swazi, the matriarch of the Safari Park’s elephant herd. Elephants rely on strong, dynamic yet ever-changing relationships for survival. Swazi, despite her smaller size, is a dominant force whose leadership helps her entire herd thrive. As you get ready to board, don’t miss the special archway leading to the loading area. Here, you’ll find the only karyotype represented that is not from an animal. It honors the remarkable legacy of Dr. Kurt Benirschke, the visionary founder of the Frozen Zoo, who laid the groundwork for saving and protecting wildlife for generations to come. Dr. Benirschke’s lasting impact reminds us that what we do matters—and when we set out to experience the world and connect with wildlife, we can all make a difference.

October carries whispers of something exciting at the San Diego Zoo. As twilight descends and shadows grow long, the Zoo transforms into a luminescent wonderland where glowing jack-o'-lanterns cast dancing shadows and mysterious friends emerge from the darkness.

Every weekend in October, join us for HalGLOWeen. This unforgettable after-dark spectacular combines Halloween magic with the wonder of wildlife. You’ll feel your senses come alive as acrobatic spiders weave their webs high above Wildlife Explorers Basecamp and mariachi music echoes through pathways lined with bewitching decorations. Let’s see what ghoulishly good times are in store on your journey through glowing avenues.

Where the Night Comes Alive

Your HalGLOWeen adventure begins the moment you enter the Zoo. DJ Front Street fills the evening air with Halloween hits, spinning the perfect soundtrack to kick off your night. It’ll get your ghoulish toes tapping to everything from classic monster mashups to modern spooky favorites.

Nearby, you’ll spot some real showstoppers: the Boo Crew. These whimsical stilt-walkers welcome you with silly photo opportunities that you’ll treasure for years to come. And don't miss the Python Path experience near the Klauber-Shaw Reptile House. After dark, the space transforms with glowing effects that showcase reptiles in an entirely new light.

Feeling brave? Tempt your tastebuds with dynamite Goblin Fries at Sweet Shack or absurdly gourd Pumpkin Nachos at Sandwich Co. And, quench your otherworldly thirst with Java Cart's delicious Chai-You-Later and the intriguing Frog’s Breath at the Oasis Lounge.

Spine-Tingling Entertainment

Over at Centennial Plaza, Boolahoops transforms traditional hula hooping into a glow-in-the-dark dance party. These sessions happen every hour and include family-friendly games and enough Halloween hits to get everyone jumping, shuffling, sliding, and spinning. During the break from Boolahoops, Dr. Zoolittle's Tricks & Treats brings wildlife trivia and interactive activities to the mix.

Next, slither into Wildlife Explorers Basecamp, where Featured Creatures introduces you to “spooky” wildlife ambassadors. But don’t be afraid, these intriguing and friendly encounters reveal that many misunderstood species play crucial roles in maintaining healthy ecosystems. After your thrilling experience, look to the skies above Desert Dunes. Here the talented acrobatic performers showcase their arachnid-inspired skills with the Spider’s W.E.B.

Meanwhile, the neon-colored singing pumpkins, The Glow-Go's, perform original songs and crack silly jokes all night long at the Busy Bee Patio. Their animated antics guarantee smiles for wildlife explorers of all ages. While you’re there, sink your fangs into the saucy, spicy Día de los Muertos Burger at Busy Bee Café.

Spooky Spectacles

On your way to the Outback, take a detour down Treetops Way to fuel up with the shockingly delightful Frankenstein Matcha Latte at Zoo Brew. It’ll give you the boost you need before you watch Spooky Revue deliver a kooky assortment of wildlife-themed specialty acts in a fluorescent acrobatic variety show at Sydney’s Grill.

At the Boardwalk Beer Garden, there’s more to discover as you indulge in a delectable Bloody Scream Margarita while The Dusty Keys bring haunting melodies to life with eerie and spirited organ music. Plus, the Zoo's beloved Dr. Harry & Friends appear in Halloween costumes for special meet-and-greet sessions for even more exciting photo ops with familiar faces.

For those seeking other liquid courage throughout the rest of the Zoo, the Bamboo Bar serves up the PuAntu's Purple People Eater Cocktail, while Albert’s offers both the Tasmanian Devil Mocktail and the Scare-Crow Cocktail—whatever your spirited taste, we’ve got you covered. When you think about Africa’s vast savannas, what comes to mind? Perhaps rolling grasslands scattered with shrubs and trees, teeming with giraffes, rhinos, and antelope. Maybe you think of watering holes where lions and Cape buffalo drink from the edges, or the pastoralist communities that live alongside these remarkable species.

You might also imagine the world’s largest land animal: African elephants. They’re a keystone species throughout the savanna, shaping their environment through their movements, diet, and behaviors.

These dynamic ecosystems and their rich biodiversity inspired the most transformative project in our organization’s century-long history. Soon, you’ll be able to step into the heart of the savanna right here at the San Diego Zoo Safari Park. Opening in early 2026, Denny Sanford Elephant Valley will connect you to elephants and their iconic landscapes like never before.

Walk Among Giants

In this unique place, you’ll walk with elephants on common ground. Every detail has been crafted to create an immersive journey that celebrates elephants as ecosystem engineers and architects of a rich social structure. As you wander the pathways, you’ll understand what it truly feels like to move with the herd as their graceful footsteps and gentle presence accompany you along the way.

You’ll observe that, like most ecosystems, the savanna changes with the seasons. Every element of Elephant Valley reflects the year-round variations of the sights, sounds, and smells of these grasslands. The elephants will follow their natural curiosity to engage with the intriguing world around them as they forage for food, navigate to find new resources such as water, and interact with one other.

Our horticulture teams curated and cultivated over 350 individual plants for Elephant Valley, including vulnerable kokerboom trees that have been growing at the Safari Park since it opened half a century ago.

Look carefully and you’ll also notice stunning arrays of plant life with their own unique stories, as our expert horticulturists and arborists have woven the Safari Park’s long history of plant care into Elephant Valley. These teams curated and cultivated over 350 individual plants native to the savanna. African thorn trees—a favorite elephant food source—line walkways. Some of the plants, including vulnerable kokerbooms and endangered Nubian dragon trees, have actually been growing at the Safari Park since it opened over 50 years ago. Others, like vulnerable Mulanje and Gorongo cycads, were rescued from illegal trafficking and found sanctuary at this special place.

The Heart of Conservation

Elephant Valley is more than a one-of-a-kind experience for guests and elephants alike. It also bridges the vital work happening in San Diego with collaborative, community-led conservation initiatives through our Savanna Conservation Hub. Unfortunately, despite their massive size and iconic status, African savanna elephants are endangered. They face threats from extreme weather, habitat loss, poaching, and challenges related to human-wildlife coexistence. It’s 8 a.m. at the San Diego Zoo Safari Park. The sun is streaming across sprawling savannas, and sounds of birds fill the air. In the distance, a lion’s roar echoes across the hills and valley. You may hear (and feel) the thundering roar of an African lion at Lion Camp, encounter Sumatran tigers quietly prowling through lush vegetation and taking a refreshing dip at Tiger Trail, or witness the unique dynamics of the family gorilla troop interacting at Gorilla Forest. Then watch in wonder at Kilima Point as rhinos, giraffes, and Cape buffalo wander across the sprawling savanna. Each corner of the Safari Park awaits with awe-inspiring wildlife encounters.
